CLEARING DESKTOP OF TRASH AND OTHER ICONS
 

I've done a bit of experimenting to find a way of removing  the Trash,
Templates & Autostart icons from the desktop, while still letting you
add icons of your choice, and come up with the following which seems to
work in Col 2.3 KDE 1.1.2 at least.

1) In your home directory 
mv   Desktop/Templates    ~/Templates
mv   Desktop/Autostart     ~/Autostart
mv   Desktop/Trash  ~/Trash

2) Edit your ~/.kde/share/config/kfmrc file and make sure that any
[Paths] section reflects the new paths, i.e. it should look like

[Paths]
Trash=$HOME/Trash/
Desktop=$HOME/Desktop/
Templates=$HOME/Templates/
Autostart=$HOME/Autostart/

3) Delete the offending icons from the desktop

4) Edit the file /etc/X11/xinit/kdeinitrc  (you need to do this as root)
About half way down you should find the lines
# create the 2nd config dir for KDE
for dir in Desktop/Autostart Desktop/Trash .kde/share/apps/kfm; do

Change the second line to
for dir in .kde/share/apps/kfm; do

Logout, login, and you should now have a Kleen Screen

Note that if you want to add your own icons to the desktop just copy
their .kdelnk files to ~/Desktop
