MIME TYPES FOR KDE2

Mime types refer to your ability to click on a file of specific type and automatically open the appropriate application.

The methods in kde2 have changed.

There are two (2) types of mime type associations.

KDE does a superb job of the latter. Essentially, it examines the first few bytes of any file and determines what the most appropriate application would be to use that file with. The 'most appropriate' is defined by you! and is in the magic file. I haven't had time (yet) to look at this properly for KDE2 and you are referred to KDE 1 mime types to chase this further.

FILE EXTENSION is very easy to comprehend. Based on the trailing letters, that IS the type of application to run. This SxS concentrates on getting the files working by FILE EXTENSION.

This is a TWO step process.

  1. REGISTER APPLICATION
  2. ASSOCIATE EXTENSION
