Further Reading (How it all works)

ONE: Register a mime type in the kfm browser

Click on your home directory icon

edit->mime types  (or edit global mime types if su)

file->new->mimetype

A mimelink panel will appear.

In the General tab

rename it appropriately (doom.kdelnk)

In the binding tab

1) pattern = *.wad
2) mime type = application/doom

The word application, and the word doom, are not of themselves significant. As a cominbed word however, application/doom will be one of the choices you can use later when creating the application kdelnk file.
3) change icon to something suitable by clicking on the icon image in the bindings tab

Icons are located in EITHER

  • /opt/kde/share/icons. Ones supplied for everyone
  • $HOME/.kde/share/icons. Personalised icons you saved here.

Icons as such must be saved as (dot)xpm extensions for you to access them in one of these two folders. You can use Gimp to transform something suitable and place it in one of the above folders.

4) PRESS OK, you're done.
